Selling a piece of furniture that you no longer use or finding a second-hand bike at a good price: free online classifieds simplify these everyday transactions. The rules governing these exchanges have changed since the European Digital Services Act (DSA) came into effect in February 2024. Knowing how to write an effective ad, choose the right platform, and secure the transaction makes the difference between a quick sale and a stagnant listing.

What the DSA changes for your online classifieds

You may have noticed that some ads appear at the very top of the results for no apparent reason? Since February 2024, the DSA requires each platform to explain its ad ranking criteria. If a commercial link pushes an ad up, the site must clearly indicate it.

The platform must also specify whether the seller is a private individual or a professional. This distinction has direct consequences: a professional is subject to the right of withdrawal, while a private individual is not. The buyer knows what to expect before clicking.

In France, the enforcement of these obligations is coordinated by Arcom, with the CNIL for the advertising profiling aspect and the DGCCRF for monitoring interfaces and marketplaces. If a free classifieds platform does not comply with these rules, it risks sanctions. For a user, publishing on Le Petit Gratuit or any other DSA-compliant site ensures a more transparent framework than before.

The European regulation on general product safety (GPSR), supplemented in France by the law of April 22, 2024, adds an extra layer. Ads for second-hand products must meet safety requirements, and platforms are required to implement reporting and removal procedures for illegal content.

Writing a free ad that generates contacts

An effective ad relies on three concrete elements: a precise title, quality photos, and an honest description. Many sellers neglect the title by writing “for sale” without specifying the item, brand, or condition. A buyer types keywords into the search bar. A title with the product name and its condition attracts the right buyers.

The photo does half the work

Take your photos in natural light, against a neutral background. Show the item from multiple angles and photograph any potential defects. An ad with four or five photos receives significantly more contacts than one illustrated by a single blurry shot.

Setting a consistent price

Before publishing, check what similar items are selling for in other ads. A price aligned with the second-hand market speeds up the sale. If you set a price too high, the ad will go unanswered. Too low, and you will attract wary buyers who suspect a hidden defect.

  • Mention the brand, model, and year of purchase when possible: these details reassure the buyer and filter out unnecessary inquiries.
  • Specify the dimensions or size for furniture, clothing, and sports equipment: this avoids repetitive message exchanges.
  • Clearly indicate the delivery method (postal shipping, local pickup, relay point): the buyer wants to know before contacting you.

Securing a transaction between individuals

The free publication does not mean the absence of risks. Scams on classifieds platforms often take the same form: a rushed buyer who offers to pay by an unusual method, or a seller who refuses any phone contact.

Never share your complete bank details with a stranger. For remote transactions, prefer secure payment systems integrated into the platforms. For in-person sales, choose a public place and verify the product or money before concluding.

The tax question not to ignore

Selling a few second-hand personal items does not generate tax in itself. The situation changes when sales become regular or involve goods that you did not purchase for personal use. Platforms are now required to report to the tax administration the information of sellers who exceed certain transaction thresholds.

Specifically, if you occasionally sell clothing, furniture, or appliances that you no longer use, you remain within the framework of classic second-hand sales. Income from regular sales or handmade production must be declared.

Online purchasing between individuals: spotting a good deal

For buyers, searching on free classifieds sites requires a bit of method. Create keyword alerts to receive new ads that match your search. The best deals go quickly, often in the first hours after publication.

Analyze the consistency of the ad. An abnormally low price, a single generic photo, or a copied-and-pasted text are warning signs. Ask the seller specific questions: the speed and accuracy of their response say a lot about the seriousness of the transaction.

  • Compare the asking price with other similar ads and with the price of new items to assess the actual depreciation.
  • Request an additional photo with an identifiable element (a current newspaper, a paper with your username) to verify that the seller indeed possesses the item.
  • Prefer sellers who have a history of ads or verifiable reviews on the platform.

Free classifieds remain one of the most direct ways to sell or buy between individuals, provided you take care in your publication and stay vigilant. The European regulatory framework enhances the transparency of platforms, benefiting both sellers and buyers. A well-written ad, a fair price, and a secure transaction are enough for the exchange to go smoothly.
